Gustave Ernest Metz was born in Charleston, S.C., on December 15, 1907, the son of George and Elsie Metz. He graduated from Clemson College in 1927 and received a master's degree from the University of North Carolina, 1929. In 1929, Metz returned to Clemson College and served as an assistant registrar and mathematics instructor. In 1931, he took a leave of absence for more graduate work before returning in 1933.
